Bill McCubbin (Billy Mac) Bill McCubbin was born and raised in San Francisco. Bill’s father was a band drummer of some note, and Bill was brought up with music all around him. He performed publicly with his first guitar before enrolling in junior high school. Guitar chords, great vocals and a cool bass beat from young Bill would become his calling card. He performed with many bands in the Bay Area, and became a member of The Nooney Rickett Five. Soon Bill’s reputation as a great bass player spread within the circles of show business. Nooney Rickett suggested Bill audition for a spot with Bobby Darin’s band and immediately Bill became a permanent member of the music legend’s band. Bill traveled and appeared with Bobby live and on stage. Bobby and Bill became close friends and spent hours playing their ongoing road chess game. Bill has been known in the music business by the nickname Bobby gave him when he introduced him on stage as “Billy Mac”. The friendship and chess game ended upon Bobby’s death in 1973. King of The Road legend Roger Miller hired Billy Mac after the world lost Bobby Darin. Billy was a key player in Roger’s band, recording, performing and traveling the world. Years later Roger referred Billy to superstar, Glenn Campbell. Billy performed in Glenn’s band as well as coordinating live performances and television specials. Billy Mac has had many other jobs throughout his career, including Entertainment Director and Bandleader at the San Francisco Hilton. Bill has worked in radio broadcasting and performed as an on camera spokesperson on television. He has been an on-air radio personality in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe and Palm Springs. Bill currently owns and operates his own entertainment and production company in Northern California. Several years ago, Bill reconnected with teenage friend Sharon. They married last year and now live in the area where they first met.
